An American businesswoman by the name of Ruth Handler is the woman who came up with the creation of the Barbie doll utilizing a German doll named Bild Lilli as her model . The toy was first manufactured by Mattel, Inc, the American toy company in 1959.
For over half a century, Barbie has remained the figurehead of Mattel doll brands and extras. Ruth Handler observed her daughter Barbara while she played with paper dolls, and noticed that she usually liked portraying adult roles. At the time, most children’s toy dolls were replicas of infants. Believing that something was missing in the toy market, Handler came up with the idea of a doll with an adult body to her spouse who is a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. The rest, as they say, is history.
Mattel purchased the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964 and production of Lilli expired. The first Barbie doll was adorned a zebra striped, black and white swimsuit and trademark topknot ponytail, and was manufactured a brunette or blonde.
